Celebrating the life of
Susan Karen Wilson Rankin
August 02, 1960 - May 23, 2019
The angels are always near to those who are grieving, to whisper to them that their loved ones are safe in the hand of God." ~Eileen Elias Freeman
Susan “Susie” Karen Wilson Rankin, a devoted, selfless, and extraordinary wife, mother, daughter, sister, nurse and friend, died on Thursday, May 23, 2019. She was 58.
Susie was born in Savannah on August 2, 1960 to the late George "Bud" and Kathleen Brown Wilson. She was a 1978 graduate of Bible Baptist School and a 1994 graduate of Armstrong State College where she earned an Associates Degree in Nursing. For more than 26 years, Susie worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital. By always putting others comfort first and foremost, Susie had a unique gift of connecting with her patients on a personal level. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Richmond Hill and was a faithful and devoted Christian; her selfless service and generosity will live on in the minds and hearts of many.
Most important to Susie were her son, Christopher and her four-legged best friend, Chloe. Susie had a beautiful spirit that was contagious. She was known for her huge heart, and generosity of spirit. She had a beautiful smile and a joyful laugh. She built a life of love wholly devoted to God, her family, friends, community of nurses, and patients. She showered all whom she encountered with love, respect, kindness, and words of wisdom and faith. Her favorite saying was “God’s got this”.
In addition to Christopher and Chloe, Susie leaves behind her sister, Sandra Wilson Myers; and her many friends and coworkers that will miss her kind heart and unforgettable bright smile.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. Funeral Service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel with Rev. Tavious Mays officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
The family extends an invitation to join them immediately following the burial for a celebration lunch at Ferguson Avenue Baptist Church, 10050 Ferguson Avenue, Savannah, GA. The lunch will be hosted by First Baptist Church of Richmond Hill.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that you consider making a contribution in Susie's name to First Baptist Church of Richmond Hill where the funds will be designated for women's conference scholarships.

Susie is loved by so many people and is extra special to me. She is like a sister to me and knew me better than most. Susie always had a hug for me and anyone else that needed one. She loved deeply and gave with all her heart. As many have said, Susie was one of a kind! She prayed for me and my family and strengthen my faith in Christ. She fiercely loved her family, friends and patients. If you needed her she had you covered 100 percent even when she may have been tired or hurting. She loved being a nurse and it truly was her calling. I have so many fond memories of her. I miss her so much but I know I will see her again in Heaven. I love you Susie!!
from Cindy Lowerts:
Susie and I were destined to be together. I met her on the day we took nursing boards. She had at least twenty angel pins attached to her shirt and I had none. I thought “I am in big trouble; I don’t even have one angel on my shoulder”. When I arrived to work on the first day of nursing residency there was the “angel” girl. She knew the answer to every question asked and I thought “darn, I really need to get an angel pin”.
My Susie Q. The best friend, nurse, Christian, wife, and mother I have ever known. Susie was so passionate about nursing. She fought for what she thought best for her patients even if it meant getting herself in trouble. She stood by her convictions!
Susie was the life of the party. No matter where she went she brought joy, happiness, and ENTERTAINMENT! I can still see her dancing on the table with my Kelly at Kelly’s wedding and dancing with my Adrienne with a boa at Adrienne’s wedding. She taught us all how to belly dance at Adrienne’s baby shower.
Susie loved my 3 children like they were her own and was always there for them. I am forever grateful to her for her love and support.
Her love for God was unmatched. We would often have long discussions about our faith and I would ask God to help me have such strong faith and conviction. I was blessed to have such an avid prayer partner. She put her faith into action and no matter what she was going through she was ALWAYS there to help others. If anyone needed money she wouldn’t hesitate to pull some out her “stash” (better known as her bra). I remember her saying, “I can’t see anyone go hungry”.
Most of all I remember how much she loved and cherished her Christopher and how proud she was of him. Susie was definitely a Mama bear.
I love you Susie Q. You taught me how to nurse with passion and compassion, how to pray unceasingly, how to speak my mind (although I still don’t think I could tell Dr. Cortes “I will kiss your ass on Broughton St.” if your candidate wins), how to love life and always put my best foot forward and to love my family unconditionally. (I forgot, you also taught me how to collect any and everything and how to belly dance.)
Rest in Peace my dear friend and don’t give Jesus too much of a hard time!
I'll miss her mama hugs most of all. Love you my sister from another mister.
- Tina Blakely, Savannah, GA

I have read many of Susie's heartfelt tributes from friends and my co workers. Everything is absolutely true. Prayers for comfort and peace for everyone who loved her and was close to her. So heartbroken for this loss. She was a blessing to so many. Well done good and faithful servant.
- Kim Screen, Pooler , GA
My deepest condolences to the family and close friends of my dear SusieQ. Although I only had the pleasure of working with her briefly, she fit right in with the other funny crazy nurses in the dept. She will surely be missed. May God continue to comfort all of you.

My deepest condolences for Susie's family and friends. She was loved and will be missed. Her smile was ever present. She greeted me everytime I was on her floor with a big smile and a helping hand where needed. She has left too soon and will be missed by all. Our nursing lamps are burning less bright today. -Teresa Warren, Tybee Island GA

Sandy, I am heartbroken over Susie's passing but the good news is that she immediately entered God's beautiful heaven and was welcomed home by her Lord and Savior,Jesus! what a precious friend from our childhood right into adulthood. Susie and Shelma visited Bible Baptist on occasion and we would visit and laugh until the service began. I loved her dearly and will miss that sweet smile and precious Christ like testimony she always exhibited. Lovingly, Linda Zeigler Blue
- Linda Blue, Savannah, Georgia
I remember when I first became the nurse manager on 6S in 1997 that Susie was on vacation. She returned about a week later and walked up to me. She held out her ID badge and said "I'm Susie. You will get to know me!" Boy, was that an understatement. I got to know and love Susie over the next 22 years. She was one of a kind. Susie would do anything for anyone. She loved Christmas teas and cookie swaps. She loved a good joke and yes, she loved the mistletoe at Christmas. She worried so about her sweet son and was so proud when he found his way as a pharmacist! Christopher - do not feel that you are alone. Susie lives in all of us and we will be near when you need us. Hugs
- Judy Boykin, Savannah, GA
“God has a way”, it had been along time since I’d seen Susie on six south as our careers change paths. But not too long ago she was there in day surgery to give me love, prayers and hugs as i went to surgery. It was as though we had seen each other every day since 6 south. I thank God I was able to see her and talk to her that day!!! I remember Susie as a very dedicated nurse, kind, loving, humble, and passionate, her pt’s were never strangers! I send my love and prayers to her family and our dear friend Stacy Peacock, “God’s got this”
- Angie carter wooley, Savannah, Ga
Suze. I am always going to miss you and love you for taking me under your wing as a new nurse on 6S. You imparted so much knowledge and wisdom to me and I will always appreciate the time you took to help me learn and the love you have always shown me. I am so glad we were able to share a wonderful hug and catch up about a month before you went home to be with your Lord. I will always miss you and your hilarious cackle ? you lit up every room you walked into and everyone who knew you was a better person for it. I love you Susie Q.

I keep trying to undermine, why! Keep telling myself...As Susie would say “it’s a God Thing”! We will never understand why she went to heaven so soon but, we know that she is forever happy and at peace. God must have needed her to take care of the angels, get them organized! Image heaven with Susie there! It makes me smile! God has his special angel.! God is always first for Susie! Susie was one of a kind and I will miss her. Can’t wait to see her in Heaven being the hostess making sure everyone is happy and informed! God, take care of her and tell her we love her! To the secret society ladies ... I send a big hug and thank you for the great times we shared with Susie in the middle of it all! Desiree

I was Susan’s preceptor when she started on 6 south as a new nurse. Most of us are nervous our first few days but not Susan. This career was her calling and she fit right in from the get go! I moved to a different hospital but years later went to visit a family member and saw her standing at the door to a patients room. She turned to the patient and told them I had been her preceptor and had taught her so much. The patient looked at me and said “ you did good”. My greatest compliment in my 26 year career. But it was you Susan that did good anyone could have been your preceptor no matter who they were you would have done good because this was your calling and you were excellent at it! I saw you at Belks recently and you said “ they’ll let anybody in here” I smiled and it felt so good to see you! I read all of these posts and can’t help to feel overwhelmed at how many lives you touched. If I can touch at least a third I will be blessed. love you and look forward to spending an eternity with you and our Lord.

I was Susie's chorus teacher her last two years of high school (my first two years of teaching) at Bible Baptist School. She was a delight! She would say the funniest things. She was quick-witted, smart, and just so much fun to have in class. I would see her occasionally around town and we kept up on FB. I will miss her so much. I enjoyed her candor and her ability to speak her mind! I know God is enjoying having her in Heaven to spice things up. I pray for her son Chris and all the family that God's grace will be sufficient to weather this storm of life.
- Kathy Hodges, Savannah, GA
I will sorely miss my friend and sister Susie is she came to my rescue during the worst time of my life which was the death of my husband. She was there for me anytime I called her on a moment's notice. She came over one evening just to help me replace a fluorescent bulb in my kitchen. There wasn't anything she would not do! I don't know how I'm going to make it without her. But I will see her again! As she would say it's going to be okay!
- Camille Anderson, Richmond Hill, GA
Suzy, my heart is broken, but knowing you have your angel wings gives me comfort. You will be in my heart and memories forever. My job at Candler created a new family for me. You were the funniest,, sweetest nurse I know. You truly cared for your patients and teammates. We partied together, we cried together, we laughed together. That’s what friendship is. Your time here on earth was cut short, but I know you are enjoying Heaven. Watch over us!!! Dream sweet dreams , my friend. I love you Suzy que. You will be missed.
- Debbie Anderson RN, St Mary’s , Ga
"Susie Q" I'm still trying to wrap my head around this...I remember when we had our 1st argument 2 strong headed ladies in the same pod lol. What was once tension turned into pure love. You taught me how to not let ppl or my patients get under my skin and take me out of character. You showed me how to take constructive criticism and use it for my benefit and not be offended. You would always say " Now Kedra when you become a nurse!" I remember when i was going through a seperation with my kids father you would always remind me to pray and be safe! You would belly dance for us in the pod and Mrs.Von would shhhh us for being too loud lol! By the way give her a kiss for me.. I pray God continues to cover Christopher and give him the stregnth he needs to get through this. I know your smiling down with your wings and belly dancing that you made it in lol! Love you to pieces???
- Kedra Jackson , Portwentworth, Ga
My dear, sweet Susie, Haven't we enjoyed life together for so many years? I remember when we met back in 1977 or so.You were still in highschool and I was married to a soldier and had a baby. We spent time together for many years. Our lives went in different directions, somehow we managed to stay in touch. We would meet for lunch, talk on the phone or see one another at the hospital. Susie, you were a wonderful friend! Christopher (the apple of your eye) I am so very sorry that you have lost your best friend and Mother. We have visited together since you were born! I know how special you are and what a blessing you have brought to your Mother. May the wonderful memories sustain and help to lessen the burden of this loss. We have always talked and visited online. When you feel like it please get in contact (lenniemcgowan) on Facebook. My phone number should be somewhere among your Mother's things. She probably had my # in her phone. Oh how I know you will miss her, as will we all that knew her! Susie, my sweet Friend, enjoy your new found freedom where there is no pain and no worries. Walk those streets of gold and hold that head high. Continue to help and love all that you meet. Tell Jesus hello. I will see you someday in the future and we will have lunch with your parents! I love you Susie!
- Lennie Rutz, Brooklet, Georgia
I met Susie first as a patient in the office I worked for and then through our work on nursing governance. I was proud to sit on the Bridge committee when she came and “bridged”. She was truly the best of the best and it was pretty clear when she spoke of patients she cared for and the work she did. I use the work work but nurses like Susie had the calling. Her caring and compassion were her ministry and her concern was genuine. There are specials souls who you encounter in this lifetime and Susie was one of them. She will leave a hole in our heart but always a smile as we remember how very special she was.
- Lori Hecker, Savannah, Ga
Susie was one of the first friends I had growing up in Montgomery. From kindergarten until about 3rd grade we were playmates. Later in high school we ended up going to Bible Baptist School together and rode the bus. I remember she had a good sense of humor and deeply cared for others. We each went our separate ways and would run into each other from time to time. I know we’ll run into each other again along the streets of gold in Heaven. Rest In Peace sweet Susie. May God bring peace and comfort to her family and friends during this difficult time.
- Melody Reagan Mammay, Savannah, GA
Susie was very special to my family and I. My Dad was in Candler Hospital for 8 weeks and she was his nurse. She always told us that Dad was her boyfriend. And she never left his room without getting Dad to smile. While he was in the hospital my Step Mom bought him a beautiful pepper plant from the gift shop. Well just before we left to bring Dad home he had me go and get Susie. When she come into the room he told Susie to take that pepper plant home with her. Susie told him that your wife bought that for you. He said yes I know. But I want you to have it. She give him a great big hug and told us to take good care of her boyfriend. The next time time I saw her was when I had my Step Mom in the hospital. The first thing she ask me how her boyfriend was doing. That is when I had to tell her that he had past away in February of 2014. We both just stood there hugging each other and crying. R.S.P. Susie you will always be in my heart and a part of my family. Please give my Dad, your boyfriend a hug for me. I LOVE YOU BOTH SO MUCH!!!
- Cindy Brady, Hinesville, Ga
When God made Susie He blessed me in my life!! She brought happiness and joy into my dark life about 12 years ago. Susie , Chris and I would hang out and laugh our butts off at each other!! I had the honor of working with Susie for the past few years. I was blessed to have her join our team thanks to her friends Shannon and Stacey who recruited her for our Day Surgery Unit. She was dedicated to her family, friends, patients and coworkers to an exceptional degree. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Susie,I know you will continue to watch over all those you love and helped for so many years. Fly high, Susie. Heaven gained an amazing soul. You will be missed every day.

Susan was the only person I know who liked grilled cheese and pickle sandwiches. My Mother always made sure she got one when she came to our house. RIP old friend.

Our sweet Susie Q! She was a true Steel Magnolia! A Southern lady who loved her flowing dresses, dangly earrings, red fingernails and a new pocketbook. And yes she had a stash of money in her bra! She laughed out loud, spoke up and danced on tables whenever she could get away with it. Always a smile and a twinkle in her eye with a touch of mischief lurking in there! But she was a warrior too! She was always present to fight for her patients, help a friend, protect her family, and speak of her love for Jesus. She participated in life! I will miss my precious friend every day! Keep a seat at the lunch table for me Susie! I love you bunches!!
- Joy Christian, Savannah, ga
My heart is completely shattered. There were several nurses at Candler Hospital that were like moms to me, but there was this one... She would give you life lessons (and they weren’t always sugar coated), and you may be in tears upon getting to 6S for whatever reason, but you left 6S feeling better about yourself and life in general. You also had a smile on your face. If you didn’t, that was your problem. You also were told of God’s love on a daily basis and I will never forget the angel pins that Mrs. Cindy spoke of. She was very much in every sense of the word one of the absolute strongest and Godliest woman i have ever known. Her laughter and ability to not take herself too seriously was infectious. She kept me stitches even in the worst situations. Her nursing skills rivaled most. She loved FIERCELY!!!! She always leer me know how Christopher was doing in school and what he was up to after graduation. She was so proud of him. When I was going through my infertility journey, she would always say, “God’s got this sweet girl! It’ll come in time.” And my sweet Olivia did come in time, but my sweet Susie was there for me through many a heartbreak with positive words/affirmations/prayers and a hug, kiss and smile! She jumped almost 5 ft in the air when I told her iI was pregnant. I refused her gift early on, but finally accepted it. I have sat looking at that gift since Thursday morning. She still kept in touch with me over the past 3.5 years after leaving Savannah and kept me “in the know,” and she always ended her messages with, “give yourself a hug and kiss that sweet angel for me!” Susan Rankin, my sweet Susie girl, you will be greatly missed. ??

I have read many of Susie's heartfelt tributes from friends and my co workers. Everything is absolutely true. Prayers for comfort and peace for everyone who loved her and was close to her. So heartbroken for this loss. She was a blessing to so many. Well done good and faithful servant.

Hugs
